Madison is located only a few short miles from Jackson Mississippi.  Jackson has lots of attractions to offer.  Here are a few of them:



The state of Mississippi's capitol city, Jackson is a hub for diverse cultural activities.  Steep in history, Jackson has a number museums, historical buildings & theatres. 

 


A center for the performing arts, Jackson has the famous Thalia Mara Hall which hosts cultural events such as,  theatre companies, symphany orchestras, concerts & dance.  Thalia Mara Hall hosts the USA International Ballet Competition every year. 

In the heart of the city of Jackson you will find the State Capitol Building.

Governor Haley Barbour resides.

A little ways outside the city center the Jackson Zoological Park resides.  Lots of fun for families.  They have many kinds of animals from all over the world.

Walk along the trails and visit the animals.  They have special houses for reptiles, cats, and etc.  They have special habitat areas for other animals. You can ride a train around the park and they have a gift store where you can buy souvenirs for your friends and family.  Loads of fun on a beautiful day.

The Mississippi Museum of Art is available for you if your in the mood to view artwork from local and national artists.  It also houses artwork from around the world. 

Old Capitol Museum in Jackson MS

The Old Capitol Museum is now closed due to Hurricane Katrina Damage.  It is now undergoing renovation.



Manship House in Jackson MS

The Manship House Museum named after Charles Manship mayor of Jackson during the Civil War. This is the Manship home which he built for his wife and 15 children.

The Museum of Natural Science is a great place to visit .  It promotes Mississippi's biological diversity.  Spend an afternoon exploring the wonders of Mississippi in their exhibits.

A tribute to the life of Pulitzer Price winning author Endora Welty.  This was her home for 76 years.  Her mother and her created the garden and she maintained it long after her mothers death.  Her home and works were donated to the state and is now a  national historical landmark.

A fun place to spend an afternoon.  You can discovery Mississippi's proud agriculture heritage and step back in time by walking a through a replica of a town from the past. 

Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame


The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum pays tribute to all of Mississippi's most famous atheletes. 

Smith Robertson Museum & Cultural Center


Smith Robertson Museum & Cultural Center in the heart of the city of Jackson, houses artifacts, documents that represents the African-American experience of Mississippi.  The building was the first public school in Jackson for African-American children.

The Oaks House Museum in Jackson MS

Home of James Hervey Boyd mayor of Jackson during the civil war.  This is one of a few structures that survived the burning of Jackson by Union Soldier.  The home reflects middle class life in the 1800's.  Visit the Oaks House Museum and learn about the history and life of the Boyd family.  On the National Register of Historic Places.

Experience breathtaking programs in this magnificent theatre.  The Russell C. Davis Planetarium is sure to please.


Performing Arts in Jackson, Mississippi

One of Jackson's premiere arts organizations is Ballet Mississippi.  They perform a full length production of The Nutcracker every year.  Visit their site and learn about their classes and achievements.

Ballet Magnificat!  also resides in Jackson.  Ballet with a religious theme.  Visit their site and see what they have to offer. 

The United States Congress passed a Joint Resolution in 1982.  It designated Jackson as the official home of the International Ballet Competition.  Thus the USA International Ballet Competition was created.  Learn about last years winners and about the up anc coming competition in 2010.

The largest performing arts organization in Mississippi is The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.  Learn about their history and their up and coming performances.

When you visit Jackson don't forget to see a show at the New Stage Theatre.  They offer a full professional season of theatre, including new works in the Eudora Welty New Play series.  This series nurtures new playwrights and allows them the opportunity to have their play produced and performed by New Stage Theatre.  An exciting addition to their season.
